Christmas Eve in Pogradec
Dec 20, 2024
It's Christmas Eve! Joyful atmosphere, decorations, presents and delicious food!
This is how Pogradec welcomes the Christmas day!
The Christmas activities start on December 6th. On Saint Nicholas Day in Pogradec the Christmas tree is put up and all the festive lights at the town. Every house shines from the joyful atmosphere. Somewhere a fir full of decorations in the middle of the hall, somewhere else the fireplace decorated with the red socks awaiting to be filled with sweets and presents.
- Saint Nicholas recognizes the third-century saint who became an inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus. St. Nicholas is known for selling all his possessions and giving his money to the poor. Raised as a devout Christian, St. Nicholas dedicated his whole life to serving the sick and suffering.
- St. Nicholas Day is not to be confused with Christmas, some similarities do exist. Traditions include leaving gifts in shoes (or stockings) or the exchange of small gifts.
On the evening of the 23rd of December, there is another festive day, specially for the children. They are prepared with musical instruments and joyful songs and knock to the door of each house to announce the birth of Jesus Christ. After receiving the joyful news, the households give sweets to the children. This festival is called Kolendra. It is very famous all over Balkan countries.
On the 24th of December there is the Christmas Dinner preparation. Looking forward to greet you on the Christmas Day!
